The holidays have come and gone and school is starting back up again. A new semester means new classes, new weather, and new opportunities, especially if you have spring sorority recruitment like I do. After receiving holiday gifts and shopping for new clothes, I’m satisfied with my spring semester wardrobe (for now at least). But then I realized I had to start packing. I took one look at my closet and I began to worry: how the heck am I supposed to fit all this clothing into my tiny closet?!

First I thought, oh it’s just a few tops, boots, jeans… but my list got longer and longer with accessories to add on to the pile. I realized there are a few things I’d have to do if I wanted to live in my dorm in peace next semester.
1. Take Weather Appropriate Clothes
I always imagined December was the most brutal month of winter but realized that most of the cold weather is actually January through some of March, with cold winds and wet snow making your nose run and hands freeze. Even though it’s called “spring” semester, most of the weather until Spring Break will be somewhat cold (unless you’re lucky enough to go to a school with year round warm weather!). I recommend bringing maybe one pair of casual shorts just in case you get a random day of nice weather, but chances are you’ll only need your sweaters and long pants. Save the majority of your flowery dresses and tank tops for when you come home for Spring Break. That way when you go back to school for the second half of your spring semester, it’ll be like you have a whole new wardrobe, and you’ll be saving space!

2. Skip the Flip Flops
Chances are that if you don’t have warm enough weather to be wearing shorts, you won’t want to wear flip flops or sandals either. Focus on bringing back boots, especially ones that can handle snow and rainy days (I’m obsessed with this sorority boot), a few pairs of flats, some staple heels, and a pair of sneakers. The jeans and flip flops look still hasn’t caught on for the winter, and I don’t recommend you being the one to start that trend.

3. Accessorize in Moderation
Do you really need 4 similar long necklaces? Probably not. Pick the pieces of jewelry you think you’ll actually remember and wear often. If you have similar pieces, pick your favorite one and keep the other at home. When Spring Break rolls around, you can change your mind and swap pieces out. If you do this with all of your accessories, I can guarantee you won’t have to worry about where you’re going to store your accessories at school.
4. Be realistic
I realized a lot of the clothes I had brought last semester didn’t even get worn. It’s not that it wasn’t warm or cold enough to wear certain items; I just found myself wearing my favorite things over and over again. If you got the item over this break, chances are you’ll be eager to wear it so bringing this item is wise. Don’t take casual items that you didn’t wear last semester or over winter break. If you didn’t reach for them then, you probably won’t reach for it at school and will probably end up wasting space.
Hopefully after reading my tips, you’ll be able to go through your wardrobe and realize that if you stick to the season and apply moderation, you won’t have a packing panic. Just wait until Spring Break when you can swap your winter clothes for shorts and tees!
