During this time of year, dorm rooms tend to become a danger zone. The assignments, essays, final projects and obligations pile up as the semester winds down.
Most of us are ready to pull out our hair over registration and finishing everything for the end of the semester. Don’t let a messy room inhibit your progress toward a more positive lifestyle and attitude in 2013.
One of the biggest problems is clutter. During this hectic end-of-semester haze, clutter creates a more destabilized environment. Having piles of shoes, unwashed clothes, towels and trash will not encourage the focus you need to complete all the work on your plate.
Everything in its right place
The first step in maintaining a harmonious living space is to find a place for everything. Invest in storage units with organizers if you haven’t already. If you have them, use them. When everything is put away, your space will look instantly tidier.
Spiff it up
Once everything has a place, it’s time to beautify your environment. An undecorated dorm room can easily seem like a prison cell — given the standard four cement walls, bed and dresser. People usually say “less is more.” But in this case, the more you decorate your walls and cover up those concrete bricks and harsh tile floor, the better.
Zen your space
Even though this last tip may be more of a personal suggestion and less of a decorative tip, it’s just as useful when trying to maintain harmony and create a positive study space.
It’s essential that you mentally separate your work space and sleep or recreational space. Most of us have a desk of some kind in our dorms or apartments. Try to use your desk wisely and make the space conducive to studying. Make sure pens, Post-it notes, highlighters and other study tools are within close reach. Doing homework in bed, or attempting to do so, can be a destructive habit and make both sleep and productive work futile.
If you still find yourself unable to focus in your room, there are other options. Libraries, study rooms or even outside (if you live in a warm climate like me) are great places to get things done. They are also great escapes from your dorm room or roommate.
