Even though February had an extra day this year, it was still a short month. And I think we’re all glad it’s over.
So many wonderful things wait on the other side: mild weather, spring sports leagues, budding trees and SPRING BREAK.
Hollywood might lead you to believe that spring break is a time for ordinarily mature and respectable college students to lose their minds (and shirts) in Mexico.
This may be a reality for some, but it’s definitely not the norm.
I never did the Mexico thing, but I did travel every spring break to New York City, San Diego, Australia and Costa Rica. Each trip was incredible, but part of me wonders what it would have been like to stay on campus. Plenty of my friends choose to save money and kick back over break, and I know they enjoyed every moment.
If you’ll be sticking around for spring break, here are five ways to make the most of your vacation.
While your mind takes a break from the books, consider channeling your energy into a worthwhile cause. At my Alma Mater (the University of Virginia), Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a very popular choice among students.
Volunteers can sign up to join one of dozens of projects, most focusing on environmental conservation, disaster relief and human services. Some sites require travel, but others are local. Whether you prefer to join a team or go it solo, look into volunteer opportunities in your area.
2. Explore your town
I’m sure there are things you’ve been meaning to do in your college town, but you haven’t yet found the time.
Use your free week to check a few items off the college bucket list. Go for a hike, walk through town, pop into a local museum. If you have a car on campus, your radius is considerably wider. Browse the internet for sites of interest and convince a few friends to tag along.
3. Take a professor to lunch
This may not hold true for your school, but treating a professor to a casual meal is a fairly common occurrence at UVA.
I think it’s a wonderful tradition. Your professors are some of the smartest and most interesting people you’ll meet in your entire life. If you can look past any fears of awkward conversation and ignore the fact that your dining companion determines your grade, I think you’ll be surprised at how much you enjoy the experience.
With classes put on hold, spring break is the perfect time to extend an invitation.
4. Use the rec center
Hopefully you’ve entered the gym at least a few times during your college career, but have you taken advantage of every last inch?
College centers are like indoor playgrounds. Many have massive indoor pools, rock climbing walls, squash courts, hot tubs, dance studios and indoor tracks. Spend your free time learning a new sport or skill, while the gym is relatively empty.
During my senior year, my girlfriends and I made a habit of swimming laps on Sundays and enjoying a post workout soak in the hot tub. It felt like a mini spa retreat, and I wish we had started the tradition sooner.
After graduation, you will foot a hefty bill to enjoy similar facilities, so make the most of it now.
5. Read a book for pleasure
Did you just write ‘book’ and ‘pleasure’ in the same sentence?
Yes, yes, I did. At the risk of sounding like a Hooked on Phonics ad from the 1990′s, reading is fun! Especially when it isn’t forced. Give your mind a rest from drab textbooks, academic articles and monotonous case studies, and pick up a light novel.
It’s absolutely refreshing.
