In my classroom, the students are in class for 100 minutes at a time. We rotate to three groups during the class period. They are in the small group with the teacher for approx. 30 minutes, where they are taught a lesson that focuses on FCAT skills; then they are at the computer for approx. 30 minutes, working on a computer software program; finally, they are in an independent center, where they use the USA TODAY newspaper to look for current stories that have an impact on their lives. They write summaries of the stories and often times create their own story extensions for stories in the newspaper. I love using the USA TODAY in my classroom!
