.... I believe personally that those who want to pursue a career in writing may go to a collage with a writing program purely to improve thier skills, or learn new ones.If someone goes to a collage to learn about how to write, they may be looking to hone thier writing skills or develop some new ones. Either way, it isn't a skill that only some can have innately. I would like to think that even the most ameture writers can become better under the right guidance.

I worked as an administrator at Emory for many years and never knew the Creative Writing program to hold national distinction. Georgia State U. has a more sought after program from Georgians than the Emory program. Anyhoo, your response is so right on....either a writer has it or they don't. My desire is that university writing programs engage in a metamorphasis of their programs with curriculum to engage a diversity of talented writers in a much more valuable way intellectually: educating them on the tactical truths of working in American theater, publishing, film and technology as a creative writer. The business of creative writing is so snubbed at my academia which makes most programs miss the point. The gift of writing comes from Our Creator; knowing how to acquire and maintain sponsorship and endowments for these cultural treasures deserves a PhD.

Can't believe that Sarah Lawrence College is not on this list. Sarah Lawrence offers a demanding, rigorous and creative academic environment for thinking writers who want to direct their own learning. At least that's what my SLC alum found.

Many fine musicians take lessons to learn to play their instruments, and take classes to study composition; many fine actors study acting in colleges and universities; many very talented artists formally study their art forms. Similarly, many writers study writing formally. If writing can't be taught, I would guess that neither can playing the cello or painting.
