Dallas, Texas is a metropolitan area full of different styles, and Southern Methodist University, resting in the heart of Highland Park, is a reflection of the city’s fashion melting pot.
Although students know how to carry off a multitude of looks, they also are aware that Dallas is the home of the southern belle and beauty pageants, and therefore know how to dress up in their Sunday best for football tailgates on the Boulevard.
The Deep Ellum area is known for its hipster vibe, and is home to many artists and musicians who express their style through their clothing ensembles.
The Arts District and Downtown boast a more urban (or city business casual) mode of dress, while Uptown is home to affluent, fashion-conscious post-graduates who are always put together, fun and stylish.
Finally, Highland Park holds closer ties to the southern belle look, which students at SMU learn to appreciate and adhere to.
When a student wears something edgy or unexpected, she will ensure that her hair still lies perfectly, and that every piece is spotless and thought-out. Disorder and distress are rarely realized in a Fashionista’s outfit at SMU.
Even in carefully selected Lululemon workout gear, her hair and makeup will no doubt be flawless.
The go-to look at SMU almost always includes a pair of pearl earrings and probably some Tory Burch flats.
The true Fashionistas, however, know how to rock a classy southern look without falling into the pricy (and safe) equation that some students use as their personal style Bible.
I chose this lovely Fashionista to represent fashion at my university, because she managed to make her outfit unique and interesting while maintaining the sophistication and elegance that is expected.
She also succeeded in doing so on an affordable budget.
The color combination of red and white adds a patriotic feel to her full feminine skirt and school-girl button up, both from Anthropologie.
Her bright beaded hoop earrings from Forever 21 add color and spunk to her outfit, and her oversized Henri Bendel tote serves as a great trendy book bag for class.
Finally, her shoes from Urban Outfitters are cute and comfortable, a necessity for being on time for a class at the other end of campus!
When dressing at SMU, it is important to revere the expectations of poise and style without blending into the crowd.
And with a runway as long and central as the Boulevard on campus, a Fashionista has the best excuse to stand out!
