Getting dressed in Syracuse is a skill that non-native students develop over time. With fluctuating temperatures and various forms of precipitation all contained within a day, deciding what to wear is far from a simple task. Umbrellas and rain boots are go-to accessories as are scarves, mittens, head wraps and earmuffs. Oftentimes comfort and warmth take priority over fashion on campus, especially as the days cycle through different shades of gray while the wind whips bursts of frigid air. Many female students rely on the popular North Face fleece, leggings and UGG boots while the males break out their Timberland boots paired with loose sweats. Nonetheless, many students do face the challenge and express their own style. No matter the day or weather, layering is always key.
When Mother Nature consistently can’t decide whether to cover the campus with warm rays of sunshine or a wintry mix, layers prove to be a student’s trusted companion. It’s easy to pull a cozy knit sweater over a simple long-sleeved top on a chilly morning and remove it later if it gets warmer. This Fashionista sports a typical layered outfit perfect for an autumn day. She wears a candy-apple red, three-quarter-sleeve button-up over a basic white tank. The lightweight fabric allows her to add a cropped jacket to the ensemble if the air turns brisk. Her top’s burst of color is also an ideal way to bring life to the gray day while also picking up the hue of the crunchy fall leaves. To beat the breeze, she wraps a chunky, cream knit scarf around her neck adding a laid-back feel to her overall casual-chic look.
On the bottom she wears simple black leggings — a staple item in the wardrobe of the majority of female students on campus. She tucks them into classic black boots embellished with a silver buckle — a shoe that instantly helps polish off her outfit. Boots and Syracuse go together like peanut butter and jelly. Whether they are snow, rain, riding, combat, ankle or any other style (booties count, too!), boots are a must-have for students. To complete her look, she adds a variety of accessories. On her wrist she follows the menswear trend with her gold oversized watch. The flash of gold not only complements the season’s colors but also contrasts with her bright top. She creates balance by wearing a subtle silver bracelet on her opposite wrist. As a final feminine touch, she wears bold pearl earrings that peek out behind her blonde locks. No matter what mood Mother Nature is in, this Fashionista can easily (and fashionably) modify her outfit.
In Syracuse, seasons act as guidelines in terms of appropriate attire. No matter the weather, campus contains individuals that aren’t intimidated by Mother Nature. Rather than backing down, they accept her challenge by fashionably combating the weather.
