Sitting in the heart of the South, Savannah, Ga., is a diverse city full of inspiration. Over the years, mainly those since Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) showed up on the map, the city has been transformed into a mecca for art, design and style.
With that inevitable southern charm, you never know who you will encounter while strolling the famous cobblestone streets. Most of the time, however, it’s SCAD students.
Rather than being secluded onto a distinct campus, SCAD buildings are spread throughout the city, leaving students immersed in urban life and right in the middle of the historic district. The creativity of these students exceeds the classroom and is beyond measure. As a result, the fashion is just as charismatic as the people. As Miuccia Prada once put it, “What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language.”
This fashion design major is someone to look out for when scouting street style in Savannah. She is an ideal personification of the SCAD panache, describing her own style as “an eclectic mix of retro-glam with an infusion of modern elegance.” And with “unexpected combinations, surprising prints and sumptuous fabrics,” her look reflects the originality that is so effortlessly exposed through fashion within our student body.
Pairing a basic dress from H&M with a timeless blazer keeps this Fashionista’s mostly black ensemble simple but classy. The subtle mix of prints between her leopard pants and snakeskin bag gives the look just enough verve to go perfectly with her vibrant red hair.
All you have to do is go anywhere near the fashion building and it is akin to being at Lincoln Center for New York Fashion Week. Students strive to look their best for class every day here at SCAD. The clothes and accessories are always unique and often vintage.
This Fashionista dons pieces from college-budget-friendly stores like Forever21 and Target. Unfortunately, though, Savannah is not quite a hotspot for shopping, so fashion students and lovers are first and foremost online shoppers. Retailers such as ZARA, Topshop and ASOS are among the most browsed sites.
If an outfit isn’t from somewhere on the Internet or a local boutique or thrift store, it’s homemade. SCAD is a very collaborative community and students not only work together on projects, but they are each other’s best supporters and most loyal customers.
Between the unique style from students (and even the staff), the annual SCAD Fashion Show, SCAD Style Week and more, Savannah becomes our own little fashion capital of the world, or in this case, the South. Even Mammy told Scarlett in Gone With The Wind, “Savannah would be better for you!”
