U.S. gymnast Jordyn Wieber performs on the floor during the women’s team final at the 2012 Summer Olympics Tuesday in London.
Though reigning world champion and now Olympic gold medalist Jordyn Wieber cites the vault and beam as her favorite events, she’s a versatile competitor who dominates all exercises. Her record proves it: she’s the 2011 All-Around World Champion, U.S. Senior National Champion, and the American Cup Champion. Off the mat, Jordyn’s a humble and happy teen who values her family and loves fashion.
•”I started gymnastics when I was really young—about four years old. My mom and dad noticed that I had a lot of muscle, and they decided gymnastics would be a good fit for me. I ended up loving it.”
•”I train six days a week on every day except Sunday. Some days, it’s twice a day. Gymnasts have pretty strict diets. We have to make sure that we stay really healthy and get good nutrition. I don’t eat any junk food! My favorite food is sushi.”
•”My favorite color leotard has always been purple, so you’ll always see me in a deep purple. I do wear makeup when I compete; I love CoverGirl mascara and I also use their eyeliner pencil. I’ve always liked pencil better than liquid eyeliner.”
•”My family has been so great; they’ve made a lot of sacrifices so that I’m able to go to practice every single day. My parents are always making sure everything’s in order for me. I know that they’ll be in the stands at every competition. My mom hasn’t missed a single competition of mine yet, and that’s really important to me.”
•”I don’t know my specific plans yet for after the Olympics, but I’d love to go to college. Whether it’s in a few years or soon, I don’t know. It all just depends. It would be good to get that experience and hopefully start a career afterwards.”
