Researching the industry in which you want to intern will help you prepare for the interview.
With the job market being so competitive, it is vital to get some internship experience before you graduate from college. But what if you want to intern in a field that is outside of your major? What if you are a junior or a senior and you do not have time to switch your major? Not a problem! With the right research and extracurricular experience, you can get that internship. Follow these tips to ensure success:
Volunteering is a great way to show you have experience in that industry. Interested in public relations? See if your school has a chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) or a marketing club. Interested in film? Join a film class or start your own. Also try volunteering at local film festivals. There are so many opportunities available; you just have to look for them.
When you apply for an internship you want to impress the employer with your knowledge, so it is always a good idea to do your research. Read newspapers, magazines, blogs and books that are related to that industry. It is so important to be in the know, especially if you do not have formal background in that industry.
If you do not have enough time to switch your major, consider adding a minor or taking classes related to that industry. For example, if you are interested in PR or marketing, see if your school offers any relevant communications or business classes. Be sure to include those in your resume!
Write a blog.
Employers want to see that you have passion. Just remember to keep your content appropriate. You can blog about nearly anything. Interested in fashion or film, for example? Show it! Write regularly and don’t forget to have fun.
Put it all together.
Now that you have done the work, it is time to put it all together. Include it in your resume or cover letter. Let them know what you have done to show your passion for the industry. Put your relevant classes, your volunteer or club experience, and any other important information on your resume. This is your time to shine so don’t hold back.
