It’s easy to fall into a defeatist attitude regarding scholarships, especially if you haven’t landed one yet. Even though summer is here, it’s not too late to earn a scholarship. There are still plenty of scholarships that haven’t reached their deadlines yet, which can help cover tuition bills and school expenses for the fall semester (or later, in some cases).
Here are just four of the many summer scholarships you can still apply for.
1. Make Me Laugh Scholarship
If you’re funny (or think you’re funny), then you may want to apply for the Make Me Laugh Scholarship 2013 by Aug. 31.
This $1,500 scholarship offered by ScholarshipExperts.com goes out to one hilarious soul who’s at least 13 years old, a legal U.S. resident, currently enrolled (or will be enrolled by fall 2019) in an accredited post-secondary institution of higher education and the writer of the funniest essay under 250 words. How much more lenient can the requirements get? It essentially covers anyone who plans to be a college student in the semi-near future.
According to the website, they don’t care to know why you deserve the scholarship or what your grades look like. The essay question asks applicants to describe an incident in their lives — funny or embarrassing, fact or fiction — and make them laugh. You’ll be pressed to find a more wide-open essay topic. Maybe make sure you’re actually funny before applying, though. You can find out if you’re funny by telling a joke to a disinterested stranger. Maybe do this a few times.
2. Vista Health Solutions
Vista Health Solutions is awarding a $500 scholarship for the fall semester to a health-conscious student who can write the most compelling essay. The application deadline is Aug. 1. Winners are announced on Aug. 15.
The applicant must plan on attending college for the fall 2013 semester (high school seniors, incoming college students and current college students are all eligible) and must write a 1,000-1,500 word essay on how they’ll take charge of their health during college. With college being a busy and stressful time, plenty of students eat whatever’s around. You don’t have to become a nutritionist to win this scholarship. If you’re sincerely interested in being healthy during your college years, then you should apply for this scholarship.
But please keep in mind: While coffee is a staple of a college student’s diet, it remains a gray area in the health debate, so maybe don’t mention it in the essay. Unless, of course, you can compellingly argue why it’s healthy.
3. Flavor of the Month Scholarship
You probably have a favorite ice cream flavor, but have you ever thought about what ice cream flavor you have the most in common with?
The Flavor of the Month Scholarship, offered by ScholarshipExperts.com, has a July 31 deadline and is open to legal U.S. citizens who are at least 13 years old and currently enrolled (or will be by fall 2019) in an accredited post-secondary institution of higher education. For this scholarship, you’re asked to write an under-250 word essay about which ice cream flavor you would be (if you were one) and why. July is National Ice Cream Month, as designated by president Ronald Reagan in the ’80s, so show your respects and write something awesome.
4. “No Essay” Scholarship
The “No Essay” Scholarship, offered by College Prowler, isn’t technically a summer scholarship. Whereas most scholarships are offered once a year or only once ever, the “No Essay” Scholarship is offered at the end of each month, which includes the summer months.
As you can probably tell from the title, this $2,000 scholarship requires no essay. It’s a non-writer friendly scholarship that pretty much only requires a pulse (and the skills to login or register for the website). If you’re a high school or current college student or looking to attend college in the next 12 months, then you qualify. Winners are chosen at random. To not apply for such a simple scholarship this summer is almost inexcusable.
You may already be lined up to receive student loans this upcoming fall semester but that doesn’t mean you can’t apply for some of these scholarships this summer. Nothing beats free money, especially scholarships like these, which for the most part, have easy scholarship applications.
If you must sit out in the sun this summer to relax or tan, why not grab your laptop and earn some free money while you’re at it? Just make sure your laptop doesn’t fall into the pool and you should be good to go.
