Hi Grady,

You bring up a lot of great points here. I love that you point out that your dues do not automatically throw you in to lifelong friendships. Relationships take work whether it's your family, boyfriend or girlfriend, friends, or in a work place. I do think bonds are made more quickly in Greek organizations because of the common interests and bonds we all share.

I think it's important to point out chapter dues also go toward officer budgets, along with the living expenses. Those formals, date parties, and most importantly- philanthropy events are all made possible by those chapter budgets. Using a budget and planning events is where all that "real-world" experience we Greeks benefit from so much comes from.

I think there are a number of reasons to join a Greek organization, and buying friends is not one of them. Check out our article at Sorority Ever After where we talk about 4 Reasons to Join a Sorority. http://sororityeverafter.com/reasons-to-join-a-sorority/.

Thanks for touching on a subject we Greeks hate to hear others accusing us of.

Cheers!
