With fall recruitment right around the corner, it definitely isn’t too early to start thinking about how you will set up your room in your sorority’s chapter house or suite. First impressions are a big deal when the potential new member has so many options to choose from, so make sure she feels at home and help her to remember your chapter by decorating your room so she can’t possibly forget it!
Unfortunately, my school doesn’t have chapter houses for Greek life, but I’ve still thought about what my room would look like if we did. Depending on the size of your chapter house, there could be anywhere from 20 rooms to 80 other rooms, which gives your chapter the opportunity to show off all of your different personalities during recruitment house tours. But, it can also be hard to make your room stand out. It’s a great feeling to have someone walk into your room and say, “Ooh! Your room is adorable!”, so planning your space ahead of time can help you create one of the best spaces.
Of course, you might be sharing your room with two, three or five other chapter members, but compromise is key. Set up a Skype date or Google Hangout before you head out to shop for your space, and remember to discuss what you need and what you already have. Don’t forget the never-ending list of major house rules (no candles, no painting, no nails, etc.) before you make any big purchases.
Here are some things you and your roommates can and should discuss when planning out your space:
Pick a color scheme.
The best way to make sure your room stands out is to coordinate everything. I would suggest not using your sorority’s colors, since chances are these will be in use all over the house and you want your room to be unique. Design Seeds has a lot of these color palettes. They’re great for giving you some inspiration for colors to use in your future room.
Have unique decor.
Pick items that are different from the usual dorm or sorority room decor. The “#sororitygirlproblem” pillow from Dormify is adorable and different from others since it’s not a normal solid or patterned pillow. Besides just being cute, it will also bring a smile from your fellow sorority sisters who visit your room and can serve as a great talking point if there is a lull in conversation during recruitment.
Craft your own decorations.
A great way to have items in your room that will stand out is to make them yourself. You’ll want to show your sorority pride by having letters somewhere in your room, so why not craft them yourself? You could even make a great “family tree” to show off your Greek family pride. Making your own decorations ensures that no one else will have something similar — and it also can save you some money!
Of course, potential new members shouldn’t be choosing a chapter based on its rooms, but it doesn’t hurt to have decor that will make your chapter memorable.
