College is a busy and stressful time. Students rarely have free time, and when they do, they want to spend it doing fun activities or relaxing. However, it is important that students take the time to preserve their memories (beyond uploading a few pictures to Facebook).
There are many ways to succeed at journaling if you choose this route. You may choose to purchase a traditional diary and record your day’s activities by hand or take advantage of your smartphone and download an app such as Penzu or My Daily Journal.
However, if you find it difficult to remember to write in your journal every day, there are many other options. You may decide to take one picture a day for one year as many others on Photojojo have. At the end of the year, you can use services such as WalMart’s photo sharing center to create a book containing your 365 photos.
You can also scrapbook or create a smash book, which contains tickets, pictures, words or anything else that fits inside a book. People who have little free time often choose this route because smash books require little organization.
• Home decor
It is easy to turn your college pictures or mementos into memorable home decor. After you graduate, you can create a shadowbox, which can include things like your gown, hat, diploma and any other tangibles from that day.
Another option is to buy an inexpensive cork board, cover it in fabric and then pin old tickets, pictures and keychains to it. This will create an empty canvas for you to decorate however you see fit.
• Vlogs or blogs
Vlogs and blogs are both great ways to interact with other people while documenting your thoughts and personality during your college years. YouTube regular ShayCarl, mentioned in one of his videos that he enjoys making the videos with his children because they will be to look back 10 years from now and see moments from their childhood.
If filming yourself and your daily life makes you feel uncomfortable, you can always start your own blog. There are free blogging websites available, such as Blogger, WordPress and Tumblr. But bloggers should remember that any content they put on the Internet will be there forever. So, blogs are best used for topics such as advice, fashion or thoughts to which others can relate and respond.
Using a website such as CafePress, you can order personalized items such as phone cases, coffee mugs or blankets using your own pictures or a favorite quote.
You can also create mementos yourself. For example, you could gather your T-shirts from specific clubs or organizations and create a T-shirt blanket. Mementos are usually very personal and special for the person collecting them. However, mementos are notorious for getting lost or forgotten, so try to only create and buy items for which you will actually have a purpose or a place.
However you decide to preserve your memories is up to you. The task could be tedious, but it is an important one. College will not last forever, but your memories will.
