There are countless benefits to being a college student; meeting new friends, becoming somewhat of a mature adult, and of course, gaining vast amounts of knowledge. But there is one huge, often overlooked, advantage to being a college student: The student discount.

It’s a well known fact that museums and parks offer a discount to those with a student ID, but fewer people know that being a student can also help you at the mall. In the past few years, many chain stores have begun to offer student discounts, some offering savings close to fifteen percent.

J. Crew offers one of the best discounts on the market. When you go out looking for casual basics to add to your closet this fall, make sure to bring your ID. Just by showing an ID upon checkout at a J. Crew store, you automatically receive fifteen percent off your entire purchase. J. Crew Outlet stores offer already discounted items, but bring along your ID and you will receive fifteen percent off the already lower prices.

Rugby, Ralph Lauren’s line aimed at college students, also offers a good discount, too. Known for its classic, preppy looks designed especially for the late teens to early twenties age group, clothes sold at Rugby are desirable for people our age, but can be a bit expensive. Though there are often sales at Rugby stores and online, the 15% discount makes it even better. While many chain stores offer the discount in store only, Rugby allows the shopper to use the discount online as well. By signing up with an email, ending with .edu, Rugby will send you a coupon code good for the discount.

Gap’s sister store, Banana Republic, offers a student discount upon checkout with a student ID as well. Banana Republic creates clothing for the college student who would rather wear a dress or blazer to class than a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt. BR also offers a great selection of suits and work-appropriate clothing for internships and jobs. Like the other stores, all you have to do is display your ID upon checkout to receive a fifteen percent discount. This discount it even applied to merchandise that is already on sale in the store.

Like its sister brand J. Crew, Madewell also offers a discount of fifteen percent to students who show their IDs in store. Offering clothing similar to J. Crew’s, but often with a less conservative feel, Madewell is perfect for the stylish college student. Madewell is also famous for its “denim bar”, which offers hundreds of styles that are bound to fit every body and every budget. Though many of the jeans fall in the hundred-dollar price range, a fifteen percent discount makes the pants more accessible to students.

In addition to the many stores that are offering discounts, a number of websites have devoted themselves to finding discounts for college students. Check out Student Bistro, Student Advantage or Globe Student Discount to see how they work.

And remember, looking good doesn’t always have to break the bank.
