When I walk out of the door in the morning onto the streets of the vibrant University of Wisconsin-Madison, I never know what I’m going to see. Usually it’s just students bustling to and fro wearing cozy spirit gear and a determined look on their faces, but there are exceptions. While sitting in a coffee shop once, three people walked in, completely covered in white paint- their clothing, their bodies, their faces, their hair, everything was stark white. Nobody asked any questions, and hardly anyone gave them a second look. There is also a guy in my Journalism class that doesn’t wear any shoes. The rest of his clothing is pretty normal; he’s just…shoeless. Strange occurrences like these are the norm, and the exception, in Madison.
The other exception to the Bucky clad population of Madison? Why, Fashionistas of course! Believe it or not, right in the center of the Dairy State, right in the center of the Midwest, lies Madison, a city full of students with style oozing out of their systems. The creativity and pure fashion genius that exists on this campus still astounds me to this day. Nobody is afraid to be themselves here, so while we definitely enjoy following trends and keeping up with fashion, everybody injects their own flair into every ensemble. Slowly but surely, Fashionistas are taking over Madison; soon stylish students will no longer be the exception, but the expected!
This Fashionista surely has made our campus her runway in a look that screams style. High-waisted skirts and shorts had a huge moment this summer, but just because the weather is chillier and the air is a bit more biting doesn’t mean we have to say goodbye just yet; pairing high-waisted shorts with opaque tights will take your summer staple right into fall in the most stylish of ways. Thick, chunky knits are making their presence known in fashion forecasting for the cooler months ahead; why not get a jump start on the trends right now and add a full scarf to your outfit? The weather is always temperamental here in Wisconsin, and it tends to be chillier in classrooms- a scarf is the solution, which this Fashionista already cleverly figured out. Mixing brown and black has always been a sensitive style issue, but I think nothing is more bold or chic. This Fashionista’s brown bag is the perfect funky pop her outfit required, but my absolute favorite accessory of hers is the bow headband. Of course it’s super cute and fashionable, but I love it because it is actually a bowtie that she turned into a headband; creativity always scores extra points.
So, whether you’re normal, exceptional, covered in paint, shoeless, or fashionable, always stay true to your style. Here in Madison, we’ll always accept you just as you are.
